Q: What kind of certification will we get?
Upon completion of the program, you will receive a certificate for 200 hour Foundational Teacher Training. Once you successfully complete the Yogi Way 200+ hours, then if you wish, you may apply for Yoga Alliance Certification. The Yoga Alliance is known as the national yoga standard, recognized for their mission to lead the yoga community, set standards, foster integrity, provide resources, and uphold the teachings of yoga. YA approves both individual yoga teachers and yoga teacher training programs (schools) who have complied with minimum educational standards established by YA. YA certified schools & instructors must complete a very specific list of requirements in order to be registered with the Yoga Alliance. Yogi Way is a Yoga Alliance registered school and the Teacher Training Faculty are YA certified. Registering as a certified yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance is entirely optional. You will leave the Yogi Way TT program with a 200 hour Yogi Way certificate, which authorizes you to teach a level 1- level 2 yoga class. Many studios, gyms & clubs prefer to hire yoga teachers who have taken at least a 200hr certified program, as the Yoga Alliance has set the national standards for yoga teachers & schools.
Q: Are we going to learn sanskrit names for asana poses & yoga terms?
Yes! All of our teaching faculties are very familiar with Sanskrit. Both Kathryn Payne & Gina Sala are experts in this field, and will lead you through names of poses, chants, pronunciation & the Sanskrit alphabet, which will give you a foundation for asana chants, and yogic terms.
Q: Will creative vinyasa/asana sequencing be a part of the curriculum?
Very much! We are especially excited about this module of the program, as it is one of the things that sets Yogi Way apart from other teacher training's. You will learn how to create & lead a one-dimensional sequence (practicing on one mat, facing one direction) as well as multidirectional & mandala sequencing, which is typically practiced on 2 crossed mats or “the no mat style” practiced on a mat floor (like at Yogi Way studio). You will be well versed to teach in both styles, and how to lead an interesting, multi-directional practice on one mat, for your students at the typical one-mat style yoga schools.
Q: Are books & materials included with tuition?
No. The cost of books is separate. There is a list of suggestions (on the down loadable reading list PDF) on where to purchase, borrow or download reading materials. Half.com carries most books, and their prices are very inexpensive.
Q: Are classes free for the entire five month period while training is taking place?
Yes. We encourage our Trainees to practice as much as possible during their training period.
Q: I understand that Yogi Way is associated with the Universal Yoga teaching method. Is this a Universal Yoga Teacher Training?
No. Universal Yoga is a style of practice created by Master Teacher Andrey Lappa, and that is another, separate certification program. Although many of our teachers & students have studied with Andrey Lappa (and many are certified in the Universal Yoga method), the Yogi Way TT is a separate, foundational course. The Yogi Way community draws from the teachings of Universal Yoga, specifically in it’s sophisticated multi-directional, digital balancing practice, however this program is designed to give students a broad, foundational understanding of the tradition and philosophy of Hatha Yoga, it’s 8 Limbs and Maya Kosha principals & Ayurveda way to holistic health.
Q: What is Kriya yoga?
Kriya refers to the cleansing tools & techniques that accompany hatha yoga & pranayama practice.
Q: What is Yantra Yoga?
The practice of Yantra Yoga involves using visual or mental concentration, rather than asana poses, to hone in your focus, to bring you to a state of unification. Rooted in Tantric Yoga schools, many of the sacred geometry, and mandala shapes are utilized in the practice.
Q: What is the research thesis about?
Asana/sequencing, yogic philosophy & spirituality will be the 3 main aspects of this training. Your special research project will connect around these 3 realms. Our style is to foster each individual’s creativity and independence. You will be given parameters, by the training director, guiding you to the project that is the best fit based on your unique personality, interest, and what feels fluid & most authentic for you.
Q: If I’ve had anatomy courses before, do I take it again?
Yes. The anatomy in this course will be related specifically to yogic postures & poses to articulate alignment and the common adjustments and injuries you will find with your students or in your own body. This helps professional teachers and serious practitioners to have a clear, in-depth understanding of the body mechanics. Understanding the element of physiological anatomy will also assist you with the more subtle energetic (Chakras & Nadis) and Ayurvedic anatomy system, which will be addressed
Q: Are the weekend lectures open for drop-ins?
Drop-ins are welcome depending on space availability. This teacher training is put together for students to gain a comprehensive of yoga practice and teaching in depth. The complete journey of the program is recommended for your benefits and rapid development. Our fall lineup of workshops will be posted online by the end of the summer.
Q: Will I be prepared to teach right away?
Yes, the program is well designed to produce skillful, professional and outstanding practitioners. The program also includes an elaborate session on the business of yoga. We encourage our teacher trainees to apply their learning experience into action!
Q. How will this program benefit me? What if I am already teaching?
You will upgrade your knowledge in Yoga and Ayurveda, become familiar with many of Katerina’s state of the art sequencing, multi-directional vinyasa, interesting asana poses, and you learn to teach with confidence and creativity!
Q: What is the benefit of spreading this program out over 5 months vs. a shorter intensive?
Most members of our staff have gone through many different types of teacher training. Our collective experiences brought us to the conclusion that this longer program is better for the following reasons:
- Suitable to 9-5 workers with day jobs, full time students & working parents.
- Will enable you to absorb & digest info better, rather then filling your brain up with info in a short course. We've found this is overwhelming way to learn yoga.
- This program is very practical and you will need to apply these techniques in homework & practicum over an extended period of time.
- This program gives you many opportunities to foster interesting relationships with the faculty & fellow trainees, and to regularly check in with your teachers throughout the course.
- The syllabus and the time line are designed to help everyone to assimilate, digest information in the ways that are easy and applicable.
Q: What is the space limit? Is the program restricted to a certain of students?
Each application is processed through a one-on-one interview. The acceptance of the trainee is based on how well matched this program is to the applicant and how each of the trainee fits with the dynamic of our community. At this point, we do not have a cut off limit. However, this will be a selective and competitive program, as we wish to provide quality support and personal attention to each trainee through out experience.
Q: Will you be offering this certification program every year?
At this point, we have no plans to offer our Teacher Training on a rotating yearly basis. We encourage interested practices to take advantage of this opportunity, as we may not offer it again for a while.
