TEENS YOGA

Personal Statement: Through Yoga, I have learned to reawaken my inner wisdom and power and use my energy in a very focused way. Above all, it had helped me to reconnect to that sacred space within me. I believe that a lot of pain and darkness could have been avoided if I'd had Yoga when I was a teenager, and this is why I strongly promote Yoga for Teenagers.

Essay on Teen Yoga:
The practice of Vinyasa is performed by a flow of Asanas (poses) in combination with breath work and deep concentration. One of the noticeable benefits of this practice is the overall well being of one's health. In particular, yoga can be a great support for the maturation of the inner organs. Stretching will also reduce growing pains. Adolescents begin to feel more comfortable within their own skin: physical strength, endurance, and flexibility can also be inwardly transformed.

This vigorous routine provides teenagers with an alternative way to redirect their spurts of energy; it helps students to get grounded in the body. The rigor of the practice offers them a healthy and challenging way to experiment, to push boundaries and come to one's edge, and a way for young people to gain a sense of achievement.

The practice can be a wonderful and fun way of cultivating discipline for any teenager. As the practice continues, the students become aware of the intelligence of their own body, and of the power of focused, clear attention. During this process, the teens often develop a greater sense of self-confidence by discovering the inner resources within, which help them to deal with the dynamic experiences that they are going through in daily life.

During these remaining years of childhood, teenagers live in this awkward space of being a non-child and an immature adult. We hope to provide them with a way to connect with themselves, and also with the beauty within and around them.

KIDS YOGA

When one takes a first glance at Katerina's Yoga Circle for children, it resembles almost any other movement class. Children flow through movements that incorporate both fine and gross motor skills, balancing as well as spatial awareness - all are led by imagination, songs, verses, stories and games. So what is the difference between the Yoga Circle and a regular movement class?

In Children's Yoga, we draw a variety of postures and basic principals from Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga was developed over 4000 years ago by ancient Indian yogis. There are postures, breathing exercises and concentration techniques designed to support the solar-lunar energy of the body, cultivate the over-all wellbeing of the person, and foster inner equilibrium, self awareness, and a sense of peace and serenity. Yoga works wonder for children of all ages. The practice increases flexibility, strength and muscle tone, and helps to develop spatial orientation, body awareness and balance. It aids motor coordination and concentration - in fact, it stimulates all aspects of a child's development. On another level, it serves to promote a child's inner harmony.

In this time and age, children can often feel overwhelmed by academic studies, as by the competition among peers. Even as adults, we can not help but feel bombarded with advertising images, and pressured by our fast paced life style - children experience these stressors early on in life, but they are never taught how to deal with them. Our yoga classes provide them with a space to learn how to breathe, relax, and have fun, and interact with each other in a non-competitive environment. For example, we learn eye exercises and balancing poses to achieve inner focus with poise but without a sense of rigid control. As children begin to find out that they can be quite strong in holding warrior poses for a few breaths, they gain a glimpse of their own inner strength, and their ability to sustain their concentration, and that gives them a great sense of self-esteem and inner resource. Children are fascinated by the wonders of nature; therefore moving through poses that truly resemble animals and nature elements is something that they love to experience. Above all, they are in awe when they realize their body can be much more flexible and creative then they had ever imagined. A final relaxation is always crucial at the end of our circle. This is the time where the body begins to assimilate all the benefits from the practice. It is also the time when children learn to relax and to claim this space for themselves - a space where they can let go of all worries and thoughts, and all the weight that they carry on their shoulders. Even my teenage students plead for this moment of deep, long, relaxation time.

Katerina has been a dedicated educator for children since 1992. After serving years as an art instructor, and a Waldorf early childhood teacher, it has been increasingly clear to her Katerina that children in the present day are asking for more therapeutic movement and for a more soulful, caring touch. She is also a certified Yoga Therapist (advanced level) for special needs children. Her Yoga Circle is for children to get grounded in the body, and she strives to create a fun and loving space for children to stretch, play, and learn while honoring the light, beauty and the wisdom within each one of them.
